Nature for insurance, and insurance for nature

Nature-based solutions (NbS) offer effective strategies for regulating greenhouse gases (GHG) in the atmosphere, reducing climate-related hazards through mechanisms such as mass stabilisation, water flow management, wind dissipation, and temperature control. In addition to enhancing climate resilience, these solutions help improve air quality by removing particulate pollution, protecting soil and biodiversity, and fostering more sustainable ecosystems.

NATURANCE is a 3.5-year Horizon Europe project that examines the technical, financial, and operational feasibility and performance of solutions built on a combination of disaster risk financing and nature-based solutions (NbS) investments. To this end, it will establish a “network of existing networks” by connecting existing major knowledge networks and fostering cross-domain knowledge sharing and collaborative marketplace for innovative nature-based insurance and investment solutions. The project will also initiate and organize finance and policy labs to explore new insurance and investment solutions for NbS, and asses policy and governance factors that impact the adoption of sustainable green insurance and investment models. Additionally, it will build awareness and capacity for green financial innovations to drive transformative change in regions focused on climate adaptation.
