Investigating the social implications of 30×30

The United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (UNCBD) appears set to adopt the target to increase protected and conserved area coverage to 30% by 2030 (30×30). Implementing this target will inevitably impact a large number of people, yet minimal research has been conducted on the social impacts of 30×30 and the specific groups it will affect, both globally and nationally. Progress in addressing this issue has been hampered by the lack of effective exchange and constructive dialogue between those with different perspectives on area-based conservation.

The project aims to bring together a diverse group of scholars and practitioners from various fields, including land systems science and political ecology, for a series of carefully facilitated workshops. By fostering constructive dialogue between individuals with different perspectives, the project seeks to conduct an interdisciplinary investigation into the social implications of the 30×30 target and explore ways to address them. The findings are intended to inform nations and NGOs as they work to implement the CBD Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework.
